Erasmus mobility 2020-2021: important information for incoming students

Dear Students,

We are contacting you again to provide the latest news on the situation in Greece and to inform you about our institution's decision with regard to incoming Erasmus mobility in the spring semester of academic year 2020-2021.

As explained in our previous emails, starting November 7th 2020, the Greek Government imposed national lockdown in an effort to fight against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then the lockdown has been re-extended many times, currently until January 18th 2021.

In order to provide an overview of the present situation in our country, we have prepared a summary of the general measures imposed and as in place at the moment:

  • Circulation is prohibited between 9:00pm and 5:00am, except for health- or work-related reasons.
  • Strict movement restrictions apply during daytime. Detailed info is available at https://forma.gov.gr/en/
  • Travel between different regions in Greece is allowed only for health reasons, business, family reunification, or to return to one’s place of permanent residence and requires documentation as described at https://forma.gov.gr/en/
  • All public and private social gatherings, indoor and outdoor, are prohibited.
  • Currently all travellers arriving from abroad are subject to a 7-day mandatory quarantine.
  • Wearing a face mask is mandatory both indoors and outdoors.
  • All shops (except for pharmacies, supermarkets and other businesses selling food supplies), bars, cinemas, theaters, museums, sport facilities, etc., remain closed.
  • Restaurants and cafés are closed to the public, except for delivery or take-away services.
  • Working from home is mandatory for the majority of employees, when physical presence is not required.
  • Violation of the applicable measures against COVID-19 is subject to fines ranging from 300 to 5.000 euros.

In addition, a number of specific measures affecting the Higher Education sector have been implemented:

  • all educational activities in Greek Higher Education Institutions are to be carried out remotely, if and when possible, without the possibility of physical attendance
  • university facilities such as libraries, study rooms, sports centers and other gathering places remain closed
  • administrative procedures are being carried out remotely and all necessary communication is made by e-mail.

Due to the conditions detailed above, the University of Patras Senate has decided that physical mobility will not be available for incoming Erasmus students, at least at the beginning of the upcoming spring semester (start date: February 22nd) and for as long as restriction measures will continue to apply.

Therefore, incoming students will be able to register and follow courses exclusively in distance-learning mode from their home countries (virtual mobility).

The possibility of physical mobility will be reconsidered by our institution in the following months, depending on the development of the epidemiological situation and as instructed by the competent authorities.

Student applications will be approved, provided that the Erasmus Coordinator of the receiving academic Department has signed the Learning Agreement.

Based on the above decision, our institution will issue Letters of Acceptance for the students whose applications have been approved. However, Letters of Acceptance will clearly state that Erasmus mobility will start in virtual mode, from students’ home countriesand may shift to physical mode later in the course of the spring semester, following a new decision of the University of Patras Senate, if and when the situation will allow and always based on the measures imposed to Higher Education Institutions by competent authorities.

For the same reason, at the beginning of the spring semester we will provide an official Confirmation for the start of the Erasmus study period in virtual mode (not a Confirmation of Arrival) which will be sent to the students by email after their registration has been completed, always in distance mode. More information on the applicable registration process will be provided in February 2021.

Finally, we would like to inform you that housing applications will be processed only when our Institution decides to allow physical mobility, depending on the development of the epidemiological situation and based on the guidelines of the competent authorities.

We certainly understand that the COVID-19 crisis has disrupted many of the plans that Erasmus students have made. However, we all need to adjust to the necessary constraints and face the difficulties that emerge with patience and understanding, having safety and health protection as our primary concern.

From our side, we will do all we possibly can to provide a worthwhile academic experience to Erasmus students, given the inevitable constraints of distance-learning modalities at the beginning of the spring semester, and hope that the situation in our country will allow physical mobility in the course of the following months.

Thank you very much for your continued cooperation and understanding in these challenging times.
