Research Activities
Synthetic Organic and Medicinal Chemistry [main]
His research interests focus on the development of bioactive molecule synthesis methodologies (mainly anticancer, antimalarial and antimicrobial agents). These include:
- Chemical modification of natural products of biological interest e.g. natural di- and tri-terpenes (abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, carnosic acid, dehydroabiethylamine, betulin, betulinic acid, etc.), polyamines and their conjugates (arachnotoxins Angel416, HO-416b, JSTX-3), artemisinin and its conjugates, retinoids, antibiotics (chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin) with the aim of improving their biological profile.
- Synthesis of small organic molecules (hybrids and conjugates) carrying pharmacophore groups that interact with more than one cellular target (HDAC-Proteasome dual inhibitors, D9a-DMNT-HDAC),
- Synthesis of small organic molecules with immunomodulatory activity (which target the PD1/PDL1 axis) and their conjugates with other anticancer agents.
Mass Spectrometry [secondary]
- Synthesis of labeling reagents (heavy/ light) for applications in analysis by Mass Spectrometry.
- Solid Phase Synthesis of “chemical probes” for applications in Mass Spectrometry Proteomics.
