Curriculum Vitae

Dionissios Papaioannou was born in Patras, Greece, in 1952. He studied chemistry at the University of Patras from where he was graduated in 1974. He carried out postgraduate studies at Imperial College of Science and Technology (Chemistry Department) in London and completed (1977) his PhD thesis on "Syntheses using isonitriles"; under the supervision of Prof. D.H.R. Barton. In 1980 he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department of the University of Patras as a lecturer. Since 1996 he is professor of Organic Chemistry. He has conducted postdoctoral work at the Chemistry Department at Imperial College and the University of Bergen, Norway.

Courses

1) Structure, Reactivity and Mechanism in Organic Chemistry (Chem. Dept., UoP)
2) Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Chem. Dept. and Inter-departmental ΜSc Programme “CHEMICAL BIOLOGY, UoP)
3) Synthetic Inorganic, Organic and Organometallic Chemistry (MSc Programme ‘’Synthetic Chemistry and Advanced Polymeric and Nanostructured Materials’’; Chem. Dept., UoP)
4) Advanced Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Inter-departmental ΜSc Programme “CHEMICAL BIOLOGY, UoP)

Research Activities

Prof. Papaioannou' s main research activities have been focused on the:
1) development of methodologies for the efficient synthesis of amino acid derivatives and peptides,
2) asymmetric synthesis of biologically interesting amino acids and dideoxynucleosides using suitable proteinogenic or other naturally occurring amino acids as chiral templates, and
3) synthesis of alkaloids, terpenyl polyols and aminopolyols, and polyamines and conjugates thereof with a variety of biologically interesting other molecules.

Recently, his research interests are focused in the area of synthesis of:

1) compounds with a dermatological interest (derivatives of retinoids, psoralens, dithranol, minoxidil etc) aiming to the modification/improvement of their pharmaceutical activity,
2) compounds with antimicrobial (chloraphenicol derivatives) or antidiabetic (peptide mimetics) interest,
3) lignans with pharmaceutical interest, and
4) modified fullerenes for drug delivery.
